Simple Steps for a Healthy Planet
We know your life is busy, but there are lots of simple things we all can do that have a HUGE impact on the earth & your local environment if many people do them!
Here are a few that you can easily do – & feel good that you are helping make the future safer for you and future generations!
USE REUSABLE/MESH SHOPPING BAGS
Most plastic bags are made using fossil fuels which contribute to climate change. They are a big contributor to unsightly trash. Reducing our use of plastic bags helps reduce global warming & beautify our neighborhood!
BRING YOUR OWN BOTTLE
Before you go out for a walk or to run errands, fill up a reusable water bottle! You’ll be reducing the amount of plastic in the environment & you’ll save money! Tap water is as safe to drink as bottled water.
EAT MORE PLANT-BASED MEALS
Cutting back on the amount of meat you eat, especially beef, is great for your health & the planet, & saves money. Buy local from farmers’ markets to keep money in the local economy & buy organic food, when possible -- both reduce fossil fuel use.
CUT DOWN FOOD WASTE
Americans toss out billions of pounds of food each year - which wastes a lot of energy, too. Produce that’s a little damaged or not as attractive can be just as tasty. Refrigerating/freezing leftovers can provide a useful addition to meals later. Food that is a little past its ‘best use by’ date is still safe to eat.
CONSERVE ENERGY
To reduce fossil fuel use and save money, turn off lights and appliances you’re not using. And you can turn the thermostat a little lower and wear an extra sweater to conserve even more!
WALK OR BIKE MORE
One study found that half of all car trips were less than three miles. Given the short distance, biking, walking, or public transportation could easily substitute for 41% of these trips. Walking or biking is healthier!
ONLINE SHOPPING?
If you’re not really in a rush, don’t select 1-day shipping. Delivery trucks have to make more trips when consumers select expedited shipping. Try to group orders rather than order individual items.
PLANT A TREE
Trees reduce summer heat, improve air quality so that asthma attacks are reduced, & beautify the neighborhood. To arrange tree planting, email the City or 215-685-4362; or Tree Tenders (PA Horticultural Society).
SHARE INFO & TAKE ACTION
Talk to your friends & neighbors about taking these steps. Start a ‘Green Team’ in your congregation or community organization. Join action organizations such as Philly Thrive, Reclaim, Sierra Club, Philadelphia Neighborhood Networks, & support their calls to action. Be sure to VOTE in elections to ensure good leaders for climate justice efforts!
